Practical guide

Make the most of cut flowers at home.

A short care guide based on horticultural guidance from the Royal Horticultural Society. General information only; vase life varies by species and conditions.

STEP 01

Start with a clean vase

Wash the vase thoroughly before filling it with fresh water.

STEP 02

Prepare the stems

Remove leaves below the water line and make a fresh angled cut with a clean tool.

STEP 03

Watch the water

The RHS recommends changing water and re-cutting stem bases every two to four days for many cut-flower displays.

STEP 04

Choose the right spot

Keep arrangements away from strong heat sources such as radiators and fires.

Why these steps matter

Cut flowers depend on water uptake through their stems. Leaves sitting in vase water can deteriorate, while clean water and suitable positioning help create better conditions for the display.
